Summer Intensives 2009 |
For students who have the goal of achieving a high quality dance education, Coastal Dance Centre's Summer Intensive offers an excellent program that is unparalleled in the Grand Strand area. The curriculum puts emphasis on Ballet Technique, and includes classes in Pointe, Variation, Tap, Modern, Repertoire, Drama, Rehearsals and Conditioning for Dancers, Our classes are small which allow for our students to receive personalized attention from our regular faculty and a line-up of outstanding guest teachers for the duration of the Summer Intensive Program. And since it is summer time and with Coastal Dance Centre's close proximity to the beaches of the Grand Strand, students get to enjoy and have summer fun and frolic with their families at the Beach. (And not have to go to out-of- state dance programs and not spend on travel and accommodation too!) |
The Young Dancers' Summer Intensive |
This July-August summer program is designed for the Grades 4 and 5 Ballet (& Pre-Pointe) students, 9-14 years of age, with at least 2 years of serious ballet training. New students have to attend a level placement class; please see Ms.Liza.. Curriculum: Ballet Technique, Pre-Pointe, Variation, Repertoire, Creative Movement, Drama, Tap. Guest Faculty: Reyneris Reyes, Sandra Burnham, Howard Burnham, Philip Pegler, Kelly Regan, Kristin O'Neal. Schedule: July 6 - August 14, Monday - Friday, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Tuition: The cost is $275 per week. Plus Summer Registration Fee: $15 (For new students only) How to Sign Up: Stop by the Coastal Dance Centre Studio and fill out and submit the CDC registration form with your payment. Cash, check, credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover) payment accepted. Payment is not refundable unless CDC cancels a class. There is a late payment fee of $15. A charge of $25 will be made for returned checks. |
The Intermediate/Advanced Dancers' Summer Intensive |
This is designed for Intermediate /Advanced serious ballet students, ages 11-19 with at least three years of serious ballet training; preferably has done RAD Grade 5 or Intermediate level or equivalent training level. HOWARD BURNHAM Drama & Ballet History Mr. Burnham was educated at Clayesmore School, Dorset, and at the University College in the University of Durham, where he read Modern History. He has worked as an actor, educator and museum curator. In 1973 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London. He began performing his acclaimed dramatic monologues in 1981 for the first Helmsley Arts Festival, when he depicted John Aubrey, the 17th century antiquary and gossip. Subsequent one-man shows has featured Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Charles Dickens, Laurence Sterne, "the Unfortunate Doctor Dodd" (Shakespeare's first anthologist), and Thomas Hardy. Howard's American programs have included Lord Cornwallis. He filmed the role of the earl for the BBC2/PBS series "Rebels and Redcoats." Johnny Burgoyne and Saratoga plays regularly at Bunker Hill, and Saratoga. He is noted for his Shakespeare and Dickens characterizations, which are popular with high schools and colleges. He is on the Approved Artist Roster of the South Carolina Arts Commission and a Literary Resident of the Richland County Public Library. Mr. Burnham is a regular master teacher for Coastal Dance Centre's Drama, story telling and ballet history classes since 2007. |
REYNERIS REYES Ballet Reyneris Reyes began his dance training at the Vocational School of Art in Pinar de Rio, Cuba and continued at the National Ballet School in Havana. He joined the National Ballet of Cuba in 1993 as a member of the corps de ballet, was promoted to first soloist in 1996 and principal dancer in 1998. Among the major roles he performed in Cuba were Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Albrecht in Giselle, and Basilio in Don Quixote. Reyes joined Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1999 as a soloist and was promoted to principal dancer in 2002. His repertory in Winnipeg included George Balanchine's Allegro Brillante, Romeo in Rudi van Dantzig's Romeo and Juliet, the Wolf in Mark Godden's Dracula, and Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty. With Boston Ballet, Reyes has appeared in Marius Petipa's The Sleeping Beauty (Prince Florimund and Bluebird), Mikko Nissinen's The Nutcracker (Snow King, Prince), John Cranko's The Taming of the Shrew (Petruchio), August Bournonville's La Sylphide (Gurn), Sir Frederick Ashton's La Fille mal gardée (Colas), William Forsythe's In the middle, somewhat elevated, Jiri Kylian's Sarabande, James Kudelka's Cinderella, Lucinda Childs' Ten Part Suite and Val Caniparoli's Lambarena. Reyes has toured extensively in Europe, the United States, and Latin America and is the recipient of the Cuban National Arts Medal , the highest artistic honor in Cuba. |
KRISTIN O'NEAL Modern As a teacher, Kristin O'Neal's classes focus on honesty, embodiment and the group connection. As a performer and choreographer, Kristin loves that same richness through smooth movement transitions and meaningful connection with the music and her partners. Ms. Kristin holds an MFA in dance from Hollins University/ADF (Roanoke, VA) and has a BFA from Wright State University (Dayton, OH). Originally from Springfield, Ohio, Kristin O'Neal moved to South Florida in 1993 where she performed with South Florida greats, Gerri Houlihan and Dale Andree's Mary Street Dance Theatre, as well as other local artists, Joanne Barrett, Pablo Cano, Bill Doolin, Demetrius Klein, Katherine Kramer, Elana Lanczi, Nikki Rollason and Clifton Childree among others. From 1997-2005, Ms. Kristin served as the Dance Coordinator of Broward Community College where she implemented a visiting artist component with the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood that continues to serve the dance program and the Broward county community today. While choreographing and teaching at BCC, Ms. Kristin traveled three counties weekly to share her dance passion with young dancers at the Florida Classical Ballet Theatre (Esther Center) in Palm Beach Gardens, as well as with pre-professionalism students in Miami at the New World School of the Arts. She was honored in the 2005-06 edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Ms. Kristin's love of teaching and performing modern dance and improvisation has been fed and nurtured by her engagement in other artists' processes like Heidi Duckler, Doug Varone, Nancy Stark Smith, Barbara Dilley, Kathleen Hermesdorf, Barbara Mahler and Rafael Lopez Barrantes to name a few. Ms. Kristin continues to deepen into her investigation of contact improvisation, studying with contactors KJ Holmes, Kirstie Simpson, Chris Aiken, Martin Keogh and Charlie Mosey. Ms. Kristin has received commissions/honorariums for her choreography and collaborations from producers like the Miami Light Project, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Florida Dance Festival and Moving Current Dance Collective (Tampa, FL). Her work has been shown around Florida as well as New York City venues WOW Café' Theatre and the Joyce/Soho (A.W.A.R.D. Show 2008!). Ms. Kristin is currently on dance faculty at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL and will perform with Moving Current Dance Collective in September. |
SANDRA BURNHAM Ballet Ms. Sandra received her RAD training in Yorkshire England. At the age of 16, she danced with “Ballet For All”, an education unit of the Royal Ballet. Following this, a contract was offered to dance in Paris, France, with the famous “Bluebell Girls” at the Paris Lido, where she stayed for 7 years. After working in New York as a television production assistant, she returned to England to open her ballet school, to which she dedicated 23 years. Many pupils went on to gain scholarships and places at England’s most prestigious vocational schools including the Royal Ballet School. Due to the success of her school, Ms. Burnham was invited to become a Graded Examiner and Tutor for the Royal Academy of Dance, a position which she has held for the past twenty years. She currently lives in Columbia, South Carolina where she teaches on a private basis. Her passion in life is to visit California. |
PHILIP PEGLER Ballet Mr. Pegler was born in Westow, England, and began his study of Classical Ballet with his mother at the age of five. At 11, Philip was accepted into the Bush-Davies School in Sussex, where he trained until the School's closure in 1989. Following training at The Vaganova Choreographic Institute (The Kirov Academy) in Russia, he joined the Legat School of Russian Ballet before being awarded an international scholarship to study at The Harid Conservatory in Florida. In 1991, Philip returned to England and was offered a place at The Royal Ballet School in London. He joined the School's Teachers Training Course in 1992 and graduated in 1995 as Head Student. Although he danced briefly with the Columbia City Ballet in South Carolina, Philip has dedicated his career to the training of students in Classical Ballet. In 1996 he assumed the position of Artistic Director of the South Carolina Dance Theatre before joining the Calvert-Brodie School as Director in 1998. In 2002, Philip was appointed for one year to the position of Assistant Professor in the College of Theatre and Dance at the University of Florida teaching Classical Ballet and lecturing in Dance History. Since 2003, Philip has worked primarily as a freelance Classical Ballet teacher, working with pre-professional dancers and student-teachers. He has given many courses specialising in correct understanding of anatomical alignment and the teaching process of Classical Ballet Technique. In 2005, Philip was appointed to the Board of Vocational Examiners of the Royal Academy of Dance and has examined students throughout the United States, Canada, Brasil, Italy and the United Kingdom. Philip now celebrates 30 years in Classical Ballet. He now lives and works in London. |
KELLY REGAN Ballet Ms. Kelly was born in Chicago, Illinois, and began her Classical Ballet training at the School of Dance Arts in Florida. At 16, she joined the Texas Ballet Theatre School in Dallas, and performed extensively with the School Company. While in Dallas, Kelly was selected to work with choreographers, Jamey Leverett and Andrew Parker, representing TBT in New York. Over three consecutive years, Kelly gained her Intermediate, Advanced One and Advanced Two Examinations of the Royal Academy of Dance. Before moving to the United Kingdom, Kelly had the privilege of studying with Dudley Davies, a former artist of The Royal Ballet and renowned teacher. Ms. Kelly has taught and prepared students for both grade and vocational examinations and is preparing to study for a BA (Hons) in Ballet Education at the Royal Academy of Dance in London. |
MAGALY SUAREZ Ballet Magaly Suárez is an exceptional dance professional with over 27 years of international experience. Born in Havana, Cuba, she graduated with honors with the title of Dancer and Teacher from the Cuban National Ballet School in 1980. She discovered her passion for teaching very early in her life, and she was prepared to do so by the best teachers of the Cuban school. Throughout her outstanding career, Ms. Suárez had the opportunity to teach for nineteen years at the Cuban National Ballet School and visit many countries, inspiring and touching the lives of many ballet students. She has formed excellent dancers, many of them currently holding principal and soloist positions in the finest US, European, and Latin American ballet companies. The majority of the dancers and guests dancers integrating the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami have been coached or trained by her at some point of their lives. On her quest to form quality ballet dancers, Ms. Suárez has developed her own teaching methodology, based on the Cuban Ballet School. She is an expert in classical ballet technique, ballet pointe, character dance, pas de deux, male and female variations, and all classical repertoire. A very successful coach, Ms Suárez has trained and coached many dancers for international ballet competitions. Currently, Ms Suárez is the owner and Director of The Art of Classical Ballet School, a two-studio facility with state-of-the-art dance floors, in Pompano Beach, Florida. The School’s objective is to offer world-class training in classical ballet, as well as the Cuban Classical Ballet tradition. |
